6 Steps to Amplify
Your Influence
In today’s classrooms, diversity is a reality. Students bring a rich tapestry of cultural backgrounds, languages, learning styles, and personalities. As educators, our challenge (and opportunity) is to create spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to succeed. In this article, I will share practical strategies for leading across cultures, fostering inclusion, and leveraging the Personality Dimensions® framework to build dynamic, thriving classrooms.
Research consistently shows that inclusive, culturally responsive classrooms lead to higher student engagement, better academic outcomes, and stronger social and emotional development. When students feel understood and respected, they are more likely to participate, take risks, and support their peers. Inclusive education is not just about accommodating differences, it is about celebrating them and using them as a foundation for learning.
Before we can lead across cultures, we must recognize that not everyone experiences the world in the same way. Cultural norms around communication, authority, and collaboration vary widely. Exposure to other cultures, open-mindedness to new experiences and appreciation for what makes others stand out, all play key roles in understanding diversity and inclusion.
Similarly, each student has unique personality traits and learning preferences. Personality Dimensions® provides a practical, research-backed framework for understanding these differences. The four core temperaments are:
These temperaments, shaped by introversion and extroversion, help educators
recognize and respond to the diverse needs of their students.
Example:
In one of my workshops, a student, joining virtually from another country, was hesitant to participate. By learning about her background and using Personality Dimensions® insights, we discovered she thrived in small group settings and did not easily warm up in new environments (innovative Authentic Blue). Adjusting our approach, we paired her with a supportive peer, and soon she became one of the most engaged voices in the room.
Authentic Blue: Offer opportunities for collaboration and emotional expression.
Organized Gold: Provide clear instructions, routines, and structure and give opportunities to incorporate this in your lesson plans.
Inquiring Green: Encourage independent research, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Resourceful Orange: Incorporate movement in your lesson plans, creativity, and hands-on projects.
Leading across cultures is about staying curious, open, and committed to growth. By using practical tools like Personality Dimensions®, educators can create dynamic, inclusive classrooms where every student has the opportunity to shine.
